How to Import Products From China to Pakistan

Importing from China has a reputation in Pakistan for being complicated, and for most of the last two decades that reputation was earned. The traditional route asked you to find a factory, negotiate a minimum order of hundreds of units, arrange a freight forwarder, open a letter of credit, hire a clearing agent at the port, and absorb whatever duties and delays appeared at the other end. It worked, but only if you had capital to commit and months to wait.

That is no longer the only route. This guide covers both: the traditional import process, so you understand what is actually happening to your goods, and the handled route, where the freight and customs steps are done for you and an order can be a single unit.

The traditional import process, step by step

If you import directly, the sequence looks roughly like this:

  • Sourcing. You find a supplier — usually on a wholesale marketplace or through a sourcing agent — and request samples. Sample costs and courier fees are yours.
  • Negotiating the MOQ. Most factories quote a minimum order quantity. This is the step that stops most first-time importers: the factory price only makes sense at volume, and the volume only makes sense if you already know the product sells.
  • Payment. International payment from Pakistan means a bank transfer, a letter of credit, or a payment platform that accepts your card. Each has its own paperwork.
  • Freight. Air is faster and dearer; sea is cheaper and slower. You or your forwarder books space, and the goods travel to Karachi, Lahore or Islamabad.
  • Customs clearance. Your consignment is assessed, duties and taxes are levied, and a clearing agent files the paperwork. Rates depend on the product category and the declared value, and this is where timelines most often slip.
  • Last-mile delivery. Finally the goods move from the port or airport to your warehouse — and only then can you start selling.

None of this is impossible. It is simply a business in itself, with its own learning curve, and it demands that you commit money to inventory before you have any evidence the product will sell in Pakistan.

What changes when freight and customs are handled

The alternative is to buy from a platform that has already built the freight and customs leg. On Markaz China the shipping, the customs clearance and the final delivery to your address are handled as one flow. In practice that changes four things:

  • No minimum order. You can buy one unit. That single fact is what makes product testing possible for someone without capital to risk.
  • No paperwork on your side. There is no clearing agent to appoint and no customs file to follow, because that step is not yours.
  • Cash on delivery. You pay when the parcel reaches you, rather than wiring money abroad and waiting to see what arrives. Our guide to ordering from China with cash on delivery walks through that flow in detail.
  • A known timeline. Door-to-door usually takes 10 to 17 days, which is slower than a local order and dramatically faster than arranging your own sea freight. The China to Pakistan delivery time guide explains what happens during those days.

What is actually available

Catalogue breadth matters more than it sounds, because the products that sell in Pakistan are rarely the ones a single factory happens to list. As of this month the Markaz China catalogue carries roughly 177,000 products across 38 categories. The largest by volume are clothing accessories, women's clothing, luggage and leather goods, shoes, children's clothing and menswear, followed by digital and computer items, beauty and home appliances. You can browse the full tree at China categories.

That distribution tells you something useful: the depth is in fashion, accessories and everyday household goods rather than in heavy or highly regulated categories. If you are choosing a first product, choosing where the catalogue is deep is a reasonable heuristic — it means more competing options and better prices.

Duties, taxes and the honest caveat

Every import into Pakistan is subject to the duty and tax structure that applies to its category, and those rates change with policy. When freight and customs are handled for you, that cost is already reflected in the price you see rather than arriving as a separate bill later. When you import directly, it is a line item you must estimate in advance, and getting it wrong is the most common reason a first import loses money.

Whichever route you take, budget for the landed cost — the product price plus shipping plus duties plus last-mile delivery — and never price your own selling price off the factory quote alone.

Choosing between the two routes

Direct importing wins on unit economics once you are moving serious volume of a product you already know sells. Everything before that point — testing, learning what your customers actually buy, building a catalogue without tying up capital — is where the handled route wins, because the cost of being wrong is one unit rather than one container.

Most people who end up importing at scale started by selling other people's imports first. There is no prize for skipping that step.

Starting this week

If you want to test the water: browse Markaz China, order one product to your own address, and see the whole cycle — the wait, the packaging, the quality — before you promise anything to a customer. If you intend to resell rather than keep it, our guide to pricing products and setting your margin covers how to price an item whose delivery takes longer than a local one.

Everything on Markaz ships with cash on delivery and a 7-day return window, so the experiment costs you the price of one product and about two weeks of patience.
